TED This week: Mind tricks

This week: Mind tricks

This week, researcher Vilayanur Ramachandran talks about his approach to understanding the brain -- by studying particular injuries that result in some mind-bending syndromes. It's a talk that may leave you thinking of your own brain in a new way.

Vilayanur Ramachandran: A journey to the center of your mind
Vilayanur Ramachandran explores how brain damage can reveal the connection between the internal structures of the brain and the corresponding functions of the mind. He talks about phantom limb pain, synesthesia (when people hear color or smell sounds), and the Capgras delusion, when brain-damaged people believe their closest friends and family have been replaced with imposters.  Watch this talk >>

Jan Chipchase: Our cell phones, ourselves
Nokia researcher Jan Chipchase's investigation into the ways we interact with technology has led him from the villages of Uganda to the insides of our pockets. Along the way, he's made some unexpected discoveries: about the novel ways illiterate people interface with their cellphones, or the role the cellphone can sometimes play in commerce, or the deep emotional bonds we all seem to share with our phones. And watch for his surefire trick to keep you from misplacing your keys.  Watch this talk >>

Maira Kalman, the Illustrated Woman
Maira Kalman talks about and shares some of her drawings and illustrations from her New Yorker covers to her children's books to her two latest books for grownups. And yes, in person, she is as wonderful, as wise, and as deliciously off-kilter as her work.  Watch this talk >>

Hod Lipson: Robots that are "self-aware"
Hod Lipson demonstrates a few of his cool little robots, which have the ability to learn, understand themselves and even self-replicate. At the root of this uncanny demo is a deep inquiry into the nature of how humans and living beings learn and evolve, and how we might harness these processes to make things that learn and evolve. Check out the evolving discussion below the talk, on the very nature of consciousness.  Watch this talk >>

Keaton Nguyen on Chris Bangle's talk "
Great cars are Art"
I've heard many people rail against Bangle ... but if you take a broader view of the industry and other cars' designs, they are incorporating many of the same designs as Bangle's (as Lebeko Sello pointed out). It's not uncommon for the vanguard to be persecuted until history vindicates them.

Ramona Watts on the Theme "
How the Mind Works"
Memes. There is no evidence for them, but the idea is interesting. So is laughter being contagious, mass hysteria etc. Perhaps the scientific proof is waiting just beyond the edge waiting for someone to discover it.

My TED story
One of my mentees ... put a TED Talk (Hans Rosling on Data) link into his blog as having been the most inspiring moment in one of his new courses. I sent the link to every thoughtful, engaged person I know, and here I am -- - happy to be part of this movement to promote intelligent life on Earth through inspiring, concise, brilliant and entertaining public speaking.

An idea worth spreading
The central tenet of Rastafari, InI, that embraces diversity while at the same time engaging the moral imagination of its adherents and the artists who have been influenced by Reggae (a sonic representation of the experience of Rastafari) provides a basis for aesthetics, the creation of identity, and prophetic discourse within the struggle for personal and national liberation.
